Sloths at Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park: Meet Our Resident Family

Experience the charm of our resident sloth family at Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park. These fascinating mammals, known for their slow lifestyle and perpetual smiles, have made our park their home thanks to our conservation efforts and extensive planting of Guarumo trees. Come witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat!

Sloths are mammals native to Central and South America. Throughout their history, they have evolved significantly, adapting to their environment with a unique character and slow metabolism that defines them.

You can find two types of sloths: two-toed and three-toed.

Their peaceful diet consists mainly of leaves from the Guarumo tree (Cecropia peltata), which contains toxins that, combined with their slow metabolism, create the perfect formula for their characteristic smile and slow movement.

Sloths have several unique features unlike other mammals, such as the ability to burn only 110 calories per day, a sleeping capacity ranging from 15 to 20 hours daily, a gestation period of 11.5 months, and finally, the amusing way they can do everything in trees except for relieving themselves, which they do on the ground once a week, burying their waste to avoid leaving traces for potential predators.

Arrival at the park:

At Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park, since our opening, our main objective has been to plant trees for different animals to have natural sightings. In the case of the Guarumo tree, we have planted more than a thousand trees, and we have had a very good response from sloths, as they can be observed regularly. Approximately a year ago, we had a sighting of a female sloth, as is customary, but she had something a bit particular as she approached the ranch, a place where we have a large number of these trees and which is also frequently visited by people. We thought it would just be a stop to regain energy and continue on her way, but that wasn’t the case.

She chose that place to stay and quickly became accustomed to being observed by our customers, posing whenever she has the opportunity to look good in photos and thus bringing joy to people visiting the park. Shortly afterward, her belly began to grow, so we realized she was pregnant. As time passed, she had her baby, which was very well received by our work team and people visiting the park. The baby has been slowly growing, as is customary for sloths, and showing its somewhat peculiar beauty.
