Seasons and Climates

Costa Rica has only two climatic seasons: the dry season, which runs from December to March, with March being the driest month, and the rainy season, which spans from May to October, with October being the wettest month. April and November are transitional months, experiencing a mix of sunny and rainy days. Due to this, the waterfall undergoes significant changes throughout the year, offering different but always majestic views of Nauyaca depending on when you visit. Below, we discuss the main changes the park undergoes, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each season.

Seasons

Dry Season

The dry season is the most popular time for visitors at the waterfall, so expect to see more tourists in the park. The water flow decreases by up to 70%, altering the appearance of the waterfall. The upper part of the waterfall sees the most significant change as the pool and the fall reduce in volume, though water continues to flow. The days are very hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 32 to 36 degrees Celsius, so bringing extra hydration is advisable.

One of the advantages of this season is that the main pool becomes a giant natural swimming pool, perfect for swimming. During the dry season, the pool reaches a depth of 5 meters, and the water has no strong currents, making it easy to enter and enjoy. Further down the river, an area known as “the beach” is created, perfect for children or adults who are not experienced swimmers. Rain or bad weather is generally not a concern during this season, as they are rare. The trails are easier to hike because they remain dry and more accessible.

Rainy Season

In the rainy season, the waterfall is at its fullest, making it perfect for photo sessions and drone videos. However, access to the main pool becomes difficult due to strong currents created by the rains. Some advantages of the rainy season include the mountains appearing vibrant green due to the rains. The upper part of the waterfall forms a deep pool for swimming and natural showers in the cascade. Additionally, it is easier to spot flora and fauna as the plants and some reptiles are more active during this time. It is recommended to wear mountain shoes and clothing since the trails will be wetter and slightly more slippery, so being prepared is essential. Heavy rains can sometimes prevent access to the park, so it’s advisable to stay in touch with the park team to stay informed and clarify any doubts.
